#MusicInTheAir Podcast hosts this week :
LA SANTA
For the first Podcast MusicInTheAir in September debuts for Villahangar La Santa, Spanish DJ and producer based in Madrid, Spain, who lived in Paris and Miami.
She started with djing very early, at 17, when her mother bought her the first mixer. But it was well before, at the age of 12-13, that she started doing mix tapes, when her sister was recording her cassettes. She says: “Creating my own music was a very important step for me and I remember that I wanted more and more every time, I wanted to learn everything I could and try to find my own sound. This is a process where you have to be true to yourself and don’t make music just to please someone or some record label in particular, you should do what you feel (or that’s what I believe :)). I always say that your sound is not or should not always be the same, it is how to grow, you become more mature and so does your sound. It’s a constant learning that happens within you.”
With a unique and extraordinary sense of belonging, enhanced through an inner journey, she creates DJ sets full of sensitivity, harmony and high doses of spirituality: all the energy she receives from Bali, her second home. For her the only “requirement” is to feel free, because music is energy, and her spirit is aimed at awakening and expanding this vibration: the vibration of love, respect, passion for life and passion for music. With rhythms full of sensuality where the sound comes directly from the heart to dance, dream, to find a connection with oneself or simply love.
Regarding her projects for the present and for the immediate future, the focus is all on Redolent Music, and she is excited about the many new features coming soon. In fact, 2020 was a great year for her, which saw the light of the independent label and record agency, producer of Redolent Music, created together with the famous artist, DJ and producer CHUS.
She explains: “At the moment there is a lot of music that comes out with great artists and mine! I travel around the world if the situation allows it, little by little. Continuing with Redolent, which has a lot of surprises and incredible music/events in store.”
And in her Podcast today, there is also her remix of “Mbodoko” by Leo Guardo, which will soon be released on Villahangar: “I chose songs that I really love and that mean something to me. I was in a “touchy” mood, sensual and straight to the heart with powerful messages like in my upcoming remix of Leo Guardo’s Mbodoko on Villahangar, with many ethnic and tribal roots. I hope you will like it as much as I did!”
How would you define your musical style today? And were there any differences with the past?
I can say how I feel at that precise moment and what I am doing too. It is like the soundtrack of that day or moment in my life. Music to me is one of the most powerful forms of expression one has and feelings are reflected in it and people can relate to them, that’s the power of music! Everyone evolves as years go by and you mature personally and professionally but always with your own essence. I can’t define my style within one genre only, it is like a mix of who I am as I was saying, with always a touch of spirituality, sensuality and sensitivity!
Which musical genres influence you the most?
When I started to listen to electronic music, definitely House music and Soulful, listening to artists such as Louie Vega, Masters at Work, Joceylin Brown, Frankie Knuckles, David Morales…was “an instant love relationship”. Out of electronic music I can say Soul, World Music & Classical Music the most.
What is the philosophy behind your music? How much does spirituality mean to you?
Basically, I want my energy to reach people, the energy of love and happiness and if in the way I can make a positive change then mission is accomplished! 🙂 I practice meditation and try to be as much grounded as possible and I think spirituality and music are very connected. For me music is a very powerful channel to your soul, it allows you to connect in ways other things can’t.
And what about DJ sets, are you playing? How is the situation where you live?
I just played in Marbella a few days ago and just came back from Mexico! It was amazing, Mexico is one of my favourite countries in the world and Tulum has a great energy. After being in Spain with all the pandemic situation, it was really my first “Real” experience and the comeback/reconnection was pure fuego! Here in Spain there are some places like Marbella where the industry is “alive”, little by little everything is getting back to normality, but we still have to be patience and help one another so this nightmare can end soon.
How do you live now and how have you experienced in the recent past this particular moment for humanity of epidemic? How did you make up for the lack of being able to travel for your inspirations?
I haven’t stop working! LOL. I can say that the pandemic has been and it is a nightmare and has affected us big time as touring had disappeared. Thankfully now things are coming back little by little, but on the other hand, I had the chance to create and amazing project with my friend, mentor and business partner now, Chus. What I try is to be in connection with myself and try to be as truthful and grounded as possible so I can produce music and work on what I love most, MUSIC, putting all my heart on it.
You are co-founder and co-owner of Redolent Music with the dj of such great experience and long career Chus. How long and how have you made this decision to create the label and what is the label’s artistic direction? How did you meet and how did you start working together for the label?
CHUS is great friend of mine, my mentor! We share a very strong connection with music and what we both like. We have very similar tastes and I can say we understand each other, we vibrate in the same music frequency! It was during the pandemic where we were able to share more moments as he is always travelling and this gave us the opportunity to create this amazing project:
