#MusicInTheAir Podcast hosts this week,
in collaboration with Epiphany and DeepHouseNorway : MULO
MULO is a Oslo (Norway) based DJ originally from Nantes, France. He grew up listening to different musical genres, from Reggae to Post Rock, but has always been especially fascinated by the rhythms in African music.
His interest in electronic music started when he discovered the Chemical Brothers album “Come with Us” and was strengthened through visits of numerous clubs and festivals around Europe.
But it was after discovering artists such as Moblack, Hyenah, Blanka Mazimela or Djuma Soundsystem, that he realised that it was possible to combine his passion for deep house and his love for African rhythms.
In 2016, he bought his first equipment and started mixing at home and soon after in different clubs around Oslo, Norway.
Today, MULO distils a clever mix of Afro House and Deep House tinted with sparkles of percussions and musical elements from different cultures.
MULO is one of the member of Epiphany club concept in Oslo
What is the track recommended in this dj set?
Joeski – Traicion | My top track on this mix and of the moment. I cannot stop listening to it. Not the typical Joeski track, but the trumpets and the vocals (from Traicionera by Pastor Lopez) give such a mexican vibe! Feels like clubbing in Tulum with a mariachi band in a sunny day!
How do you approach a DJ set? What is your configuration and your way of transmitting emotions?
This one was a bit of a special one. Coming out of 3 months confinment and having the summer and warm days looming in front of me, I was just thinking of travelling, chilling and partying in the sun. So the mix includes a lot of touches and sounds from the world, especially Africa and South America. It starts pretty chilled and go towards a more dancy and party mood, peaking with the Joeski song.
I started with 3 songs that I really wanted in the mix (my top 3) and worked around them trying to make a mix that tells the story of a summer day in the sun somewhere exotic and not confined :).
I am using Traktor for mixing, so for this set I used a pionner 900NXS mixer, 2xTraktor D2 and one traktor X1 MK2 for the effects. I love the possibilities with loops and cues and effects on Traktor.
What music do you listen to when you take off your DJ headset?
I could write a book on this one. I’m melomanical so basically anything. Lately, it’s been a lot of Cajun music (Lost Bayou Ramblers), brass bands (Hot 8 Brass Band, Hypnotic Brass Ensemble), Afro beat (Fela Kuti, Vaudou Game, Tony Allen…), African music (Amadou & Mariam, Mamani Keita, Tinariwen, Bambino…), post Rock, Old rock, Nu Jazz (Cinematic Orchestra) and of course some Afro House….
How long and how did the collaboration with Epiphany start?
I’ve been part of Epiphany since 2 years. I met Alex (the original founder) through a DJ contest for a festival in Oslo. We both submitted a mix and we just started to speak on Facebook. He told me about Epiphany which aimed at having a club concept in Oslo where we played and promote different types of Electronic music from the “main stream” genres (Techno, deep House, Dance) which are overflowing the local scene. He asked me if I wanted to be part of the familly and I said yes. Since then we’ve been playing quite regularly in Oslo, and we have a pretty solid base of “followers”. We also realease every weeks podcasts from various artists around the world.
