#MusicInTheAir Podcast hosts this week :
VIEL (IT)
The debuts continue to not stop for Villahangar: today for the MusicInTheAir Podcast the label welcomes Viel, 28-year-old Italian dj & producer born and raised in Monza, very close to Milan, where he lives.
His first imprinting with music dates back to when he was 6 years old. “On vacation with my family, I was enchanted – almost hypnotized – by street musicians, who were playing the whole repertoire of “Mato Grosso”. Since that very moment, I’ve always wanted to know more about music” he tells.
Viel began his career as a DJ in 2011, performing in various clubs and events in northern Italy such as Tunnel Club (MI), Hollywood (MI), Byblos (MI), Alcatraz (MI) and Nameless Music Festival (LC).
Subsequently, he began to actively take part to events related to Milan Fashion and Design Week: in 2018 he flies to the United Arab Emirates as the official Dj for Dubai Fashion Week.
Thanks to his latest releases, he is receiving positive feedbacks from Black Coffee, Joseph Capriati, Themba, Facundo Mohrr, Sasha and many others.
Viel’s sound fluctuates between Afro & Organic House with a touch of Deep & Tech.
He explains: “It’s always been difficult for me to associate the music I produce with a specific genre. I really love melodic and ethnic sounds, always valuing dynamic rhythmic variations. I really like creating the environment in which my song will develop, focusing on writing a solid groove combined with simple melodies, always striving to create intriguing vibes and sounds. At the moment, I feel very influenced by all nuances of Afro, Organic and Melodic House music”.
When he takes off his DJ headphones, what he listens to really depends on what he is doing and what mood he is in, he also loves silence very much. He listens to a lot of relaxing music like Lo-Fi, Jazz, but also Hip-Hop, Afro Beat, Electronic (both slow and animated). “In short, I like music in general, but I very much prefer the slightly more “underground” side of it” he tells.
Viel has released with labels such as Individual Music, Mos of the Moon, Warner Music Italy; this year he was released on Mos of the Moon with the Remix of Kid Bamboo – If You Ever, together with Enoo Napa and he is out now with the Remix of Joy Kitikonti & 00Zicky – Never Ending, together with No Rush IT. He explains: “Right now, I am working a lot with Mos of The Moon, a Mozambican label, with which I have a great relationship. I’ve worked and still collaborate with Individual Music by Mike Dem, as well as Warner Music Italy for a remix released last year. This year I will certainly release music for other labels as well”.
How did you structure your podcast?
I really love creating Djsets and podcasts. With “Rekordbox” I can organize and optimize my mix in a very precise way. In particular, I always take into account the key and the tempo of the piece I select.
Speaking of releases, what were your most recent projects, which are the current ones and those of the nearest future?
I must say that I kicked off the year with two very interesting projects: in January with a remix included in Kid Bamboo’s EP together with Enoo Napa, signed by MOS of The Moon; And then a few weeks ago with a remix for Joy Kitikonti and 00Zicky, signed by Individual Music. Both projects are available on all digital stores. Currently, I am working on new music and on many projects which, given the current situation, I hope can be realized as soon as possible. For the future I can mention my next release. It will be an “Original Mix” signed by Inward Records.
A single in collaboration with Sjavera, a young producer from Botswana, and Nomvula, a very young and promising singer from South Africa. The project will be crowned by the remix of Sparrow & Barbossa. I can’t wait for you to listen to this project!!
How is your winter? Do you have dj sets planned at the moment for the present and the future?
I can say I’ve had better winters. However, I am satisfied with the work I am doing. The situation does not play too much in favor but I still managed to work on projects and productions with a certain consistency. This is the most important thing.
What can you tell us about your next release with Inward Records, the Sparrow & Barbossa label together with Pippi Ciez and ST53?
I can tell you how this track was born. A little over 1 year ago Sjavera wrote me. At that time, he was working a lot with Nomvula and he proposed a collaboration to me. The project stems from a demo of his that I twisted in terms of drafting, enriching the groove a little, while at the same time keeping the sounds chosen by Sjavera. I must say that it was really interesting and super motivating to be able to collaborate remotely and to give life to a product of a certain level.
What evolution do you think electronic music is experiencing on the international scene?
Right now, all music including electronic music is not having a great time. I see a lot fewer festivals and a lot more private situations, with a limited number of people trying to create a super exclusive event with a few people.
Where are you now? How is the discos and clubs situation going at the moment?
At the moment I’m in Monza. And here, as in all of Italy, it is critical. Reopenings are very slow and poorly organized. This is not exactly the right time. I hope we can return to some sort of normalcy soon.
