#MusicInTheAir Podcast hosts this week :
MARIA LUISA
Another new artist for Villahangar’s MusicInTheAir based in Milan today: Maria Luisa, born in Monza, raised in Monza and Pavia where she studied, and who now lives in Milan “Where I have a space of my own that manifestly represents my twisted mind” she says.
DJ and yoga instructor, she studied to become a psychoanalyst, but during her psychoanalysis she realized that her path was another, music.
She founded KAVE, a collective of music, art and events, based in Milan since 2018, for which she has great plans and hopes. She says: “I founded Kave, a collective of friends and artists to organize parties in Milan. I would also like to create a Kave label and expand the group that belongs to the project”.
Her love for electronic music was born in a dancefloor in Berlin, where her musical and life journey really began.
Maria Luisa’s sets are as varied as her personality: slow beats, fast beats, but always sexy, dirty, refined and funny. Sometimes romantic and nostalgic for times she never lived. The musical genres that influence her the most are House, trip-hop, organic house, Rock, Berlin sexy techno.
Her secret is never to take herself too seriously, while her teacher is Grogu, the so-called Baby Yoda, a character who appears in the Star Wars franchise in the Disney+ television series The Mandalorian.
What can you tell us about your Kave project?
KAVE is like a son to me. I changed my life, projects, ideas for KAVE. As a child I wanted to be a psychiatrist and it took me my life to do it and I also succeeded. I have a degree in medicine and I am a psychotherapist. But the music kidnapped me. I made a U-turn. I went back to the beginning, to my nature, to the origins, to the rhythm of the first human beings in the caves. I followed what really guided me. And I started playing as a DJ and I created KAVE to be able to do it, to be able to play and dance together and to give all this energy to others.
And to be able to spread the music I love here in my city. And the more I go on, the more I see that so many people come together and it’s beautiful. Finally, I feel alive. KAVE, together with psychoanalysis, saved my life. Music allowed me to meet wonderful people and then… music never ☺ ends and that’s why I like it.
What are your plans for the present and the immediate future?
I would like to start producing music. I have a lot of ideas but I still have to figure out what I want to produce. I would like to start with an edit of my favorite song but I will not tell you what it is!!
What do you think of the Italian electronic music scene? What do you think are the differences with Europe and the rest of the world?
I think that in Italy electronic music is seen a bit like a demon and I’m very sad about that. I would like to be part of a movement that takes electronic music away from this vision and that’s why I continue to do what I do and believe in it. I believe that all of us who make music or play music, are part of something bigger than ourselves. For me, music is revolution. The electronic scene is like a happy island where people live by expressing themselves and not following what has been chosen for them. Everything that psychoanalysis has taught me I find every day in the world of music, in artists, in those who organize festivals, in those who believe that another world is possible. I’m a romantic with a utopian vision of the world, but I couldn’t live otherwise. I think that lately in Italy many people think like me and are trying to give electronic music and clubbing a different light, and I’m happy about that. In Milan and Turinm I know many collectives that are committed to this.
