MATT SAWYER – CLOUD’S SONG EP
Villahangar’s year continues on the release front and after the Various Artists “Underwater” of the previous year, the EP “Bloom Togeher” by Diass and the track “Tribalistars” by Knowhat, for the summer 2021 it releases a new EP.
To sign it, one of its founders: the Italian Matt Sawyer, DJ and producer, creative director and supervisor of the #MusicInTheAir Podcast of the label.
A new EP that strengthens the list of his many projects of the past for labels such as Diynamic Music of Solomun and Dear Deer and of the current year released on MoBlack Records, BornToLive, Kinesen and Villahangar. His is in fact the “Tribalistars” Remix by Knowhat, which was supported by Black Coffee in the Keinemusik Radio Show and played by Brina Knauss on M2O in the DJMAG Session program.
Three tracks that make up the “Cloud’s Song EP” with an melodic house imprint, with a more progressive one: “Cloud’s Song”, “Sunset Journey” and “Behind the Sun”.
The main track “Cloud’s Song”, which gives its name to the EP, is an engaging mixture of Melodic House and Progressive, perfect for the dancefloor. With a repetitive drum, it sees a melodic development and then closes with an elongated piano turn, making it very psychedelic.
Endowed with an appeal that has already convinced: it has already had support from an artist of the caliber of Solomun, who played it at the Pacha in Ibiza.
The second track, “Sunset Journey”, is 100% Organic House. Created in collaboration with his long-time friend Alex Donati after working together on the Fidelio evening in Milan, drummer and percussionist of twenty years of experience in fashion, shows, events and special projects in Italy and abroad.

Matt, on the main idea of Alex, sharing with him the eternal search for a quality sound, has revised the drafting of the sounds and the positions of the drum, giving rise to a summer and tropical song, with Afro sounds and ethnic nuances.
A track born much earlier, in the summer of 2019, which refers as a fil rouge to another song by Matt Sawyer always from the same period: “Tribe”, contained in the Various Artists EP “Four to the Floor 14” by Dynamic Music.
The third, “Behind the Sun”, sees the collaboration of song with Manu EL, always active in the world of the night. The basic idea of the track is enriched by the constant piano turn, and made more repetitive but with a more emotional pause than the other two tracks of the EP.

What was the reason for your change of direction from Mavee to Matt Sawyer in 2015?
The change has essentially been one of growth and maturation, compared to my first years of activity. I decided to change my life, moving from a small village to a cosmopolitan city like Milan, leaving the trend of 80s and 90s music, also implementing my personal music collection. For this reason it seemed right to change the name, in order to give visibility and recognizability to my new direction.
What is your approach for the type of sound you choose each time?
The basic idea is substantially to give thickness. I don’t think of one type of sound in particular, but I try to find sounds that can enrich a basic idea, as for example it was for the remix of “Tribalistars”: I tried to make it more refined, not so much focusing on the type of sound, but giving a lot of importance to what I call the ‘intention’ or the purpose. A track can be introspective, or more descriptive: in short, it conveys a feeling.
It is on this basis that I proceed with my reasoning on the song and what I want to achieve.
Is there a track of the past that you are particularly fond of?
I would say “Spill The Tea”, a track on the Semplify EP for the BornToLive label.
It originated like this, in one evening. I haven’t changed it much from the initial idea. I left it like this: it is one of the most carefree ones, compared to more reasoned others.
It’s more instinctive: in creating it I let myself be carried away, without thinking about the label where it would then be published, and so it remained.

What historical moment is Villahangar experiencing?
The label has been experiencing a moment of full development for a year, thanks also to the entry of Chris Leon for scouting.
We have grown a lot in credibility, and had important feedbacks and supports, such as the Remix of Knowhat’s “Tribalistars” played by Black Coffee on the Keinemusik Radio Show.
Diass, after the Various Artists in October, released as announced his first EP with us this year and created that next step that we are experiencing: it was a thick choice, towards the publication of tracks with their own strong identity.
The MusicInTheAir will soon follow a path more detached from the label: the latter will focus even more on enriching itself with new names, while the Podcast will become a real brand, with an identity all its own and an increasingly trargeted focus on artists.
The next EP, by Leo Guardo, will deal with an important theme and will have a special graphic made by an artist to underline its importance. The world of music also gets active to send important messages.
For us it is increasingly important to emphasize the artist and what he wants to communicate or transmit, both from the point of view of fun but also with regard to particular themes, to stimulate debate.
Music, also thanks to social media, moves the new generations, who also find their references here. People inform themselves through new channels, and it is right to press the right buttons, also to raise awareness on certain topics, in an ever-evolving communication.
