DOORNOT. WHEN THE PASSION FOR THE PIANO BRINGS PEOPLE TOGETHER
Three musicians, all from the province of Treviso, as a symbol of a desire to make music that does not only come from large cities and from places of more international scope.
Roberto Sant aka Airbas deals with production, synths, samples and drums; Simone Sandre of electric guitars and bass; Alessandro Omiciuolo aka Skaf, piano, synths and drums. A decisive shared experience that provides the starting point for a shared musical journey: in front of a piano at a young age. And the piano continues to be a great protagonist of their music.
The DoOrnot, after years of mutual collaborations on several fronts, were born artistically as a group a couple of years ago. Their three different musical backgrounds are exactly their strength: because it is from the diversity and meeting of different genres that new expressive and dense forms of charm and meaning arise. “We met at different times and for different needs. Airbas as a producer started collaborating first with SKAF and then after a few years with Simone Sandre. Over the years the relationships have consolidated and the various experiences in the studio have also allowed us to create that complicity in taste that then led to doing a new thing together “.
They add: “All three of us love the piano and have the opportunity to work in the studio on a 1904 Schiedmayer Grand Prix. We are still in love with that sound that we merge with other much more modern tools ranging from an Akai MPC to a Kemper Amps for guitars “.
Many times the artistic projects remain pure desire for a long time, and it is a decisive event to trigger the desire to satisfy them and make them concrete, putting an end to the most classic of excuses and impediments to the practical act, that of “not having time” . The decisive event was the request for a ghost production on the genre: on this occasion the DoOrnot realized they could develop a new and interesting project, and “Quite Right”, their debut album, is the result. An evocative title: “” Quite Right “is an ironic title that almost contrasts with the melancholy atmospheres of the album. It takes its title from the song of the same name and gives space to the free interpretation of what really is “perfectly right” or who is “perfectly right”, opposing the fact that not necessarily the gloomy or melancholic atmospheres must always be interpreted in a negative way “. A well-kept album: “We try to take better care of the production.
Pay attention to detail for us can sometimes mean being at the fifth draft of a piece and still work on the need to remove old elements to add new ones. It is an interesting job: sometimes satisfying, but also frustrating, which sometimes leads to satisfactory results. Other times, it forces us to take a step back and start again”. Each song intends to convey distinct sensations, and the most frivolous or playful shades have been deliberately avoided. But that for the future, they are not totally excluded.
Their sound comes from the entire musical landscape, without limitations. To be inspired, in fact, they listen to everything and there is no real reference, even if the records always ready next to the turntable are those of names such as Groove Armada, Air and Pink Floyd.
The great classics are however a strong stable point for them, and they come from an era they consider magical, that of the 70s and 80s: from the Alan Parsons Project to the Depeche Mode. They explain: “Before producers we were and we are the typical nerds who went in the 90s to the record shop once a week to get records difficult to find. Because of obvious reasons, this our way of being in recent years is unfortunately weakened”.
In today’s music scene they follow new artists in various musical genres, ranging from electronics to black music to the indie scene. “For this reason, we like Villahangar, met through a demo mail in 2015, because it is not monothematic but also open to challenges like this. We have known each other for many years and it is not just a record label: we consider it a bit like a second home”.
The DoOrnot, after their debut album, are already in the phase of gathering ideas for a new album, maintaining the creative push given by the lockdown that allowed them to close “Quite Right” by exploring spaces, sensations, sounds, nuances, emotions. And they will continue throughout the summer 2020, at work locked up in the studio. Also carrying out their parallel projects that do not stop, between the historical ones and those born recently. “We continue to work and then we will see, music from the productive point of view of writing cannot be a static and calculated thing but it is a continuous evolution”.
Their individual goals are also different. For the group, however, they hope to export their works by making them known as much as possible with – TV and Cinema.
