#MusicInTheAir Podcast hosts this week :
JAYKILL

For today’s #MusiciInTheAir, yet another debut. At his first time for a Podcast with Villahangar, Jaykill, dj and producer born in the south of France, in the city of Nice, where he lived until he was 22 before moving to Paris.
Multifaceted artist, with a great energy and a constant search for creativity, he is juggling with precision between different sounds of his very own selection, always tailor-made. His musical world is a mix of Classic House, Afro House & World Music. He says: “My style is a crossover in the big family of House music: from Deep
House to Afro House with a touch of Nu Disco. Over time, my music changed a little bit, not by the style but because when I started to mix in 2005 everyone played house music around 128 bpm. Now it cannot be possible for me to play higher than 122 bpm”. About the musical genres that influence him the most, he says: “First influence were Oriental vibes because my parents come from North Africa, so I grew up with this music. Second influence is Hip hop from 90’s because this period is so groovy (De la Soul, N.W.A for example)”.
He started listening to house music vynils when he was 12, and started to learn how to mix. His first concert was in Nice when he was 18 years old. “It was amazing to mix as a pro, and to get paid for my skills – he tells. – I was totally addicted to generate happiness for a crowd”.
He has played in Monaco, Paris (France), London (UK), Ibiza (Spain), Porto (Portugal), St Marteen (Holland), Marrakech (Morocco).
On the production front, he has worked for labels such as Tibetania, Kosa Records, Café de Anatolia, My other Side of the moon, Lump Records, and Cosmic Awakenings.
His most recent project was a release in December 2022 on the label My other Side of the moon, a remix for a Parisian based producer, his friend, Ary Sya. “He proposed me to remix one track with a nice piano and vocal so I accepted the collaboration”.
At the moment, he is working: he has 5 remixes and 3 original tracks to finish. “I love producing music, I can stay 9hours per day in my studio – he says. – Actually, I’m trying to finish one remix for Cosmic Awakenings, one for Sprinkle Records, another one for Safe music (The Deepshakerz’s Label), and other projects but I can’t tell for the moment….
His winter was full of sessions in his studio, at work on many projects to finish. He tells: “I was in St Marteen in March to mix on a nice spot on the beach for the festival, I was also in Marrakech for a gig”.
What music do you listen to when you take off your DJ headset?
When I take off my dj headset, I listen to several stuff like African and Latin American old songs to find something nice to sample, and Jazz to relax.
Do you have favorite artists / DJs / producers?
I don’t have a favorite artist but I love plenty of producers with a huge talent to create gems like Laolu, Derun & Keinemusik.
What can you tell us about your releases with Cosmic Awakenings, Cafe De Anatolia and Kosa? What is the style of these labels? What can you tell us about your experience with them?
It was a pleasure to work with Max from Cosmic Awakenings because for him “Quality over Quantity”: It’s totally my vibe, I prefer to refuse a project instead of remixing badly everything…. Café de Anatolia has a strong impact on streams on Spotify, it’s impressive to check their statistics, they are very smart, and manage very well their channels to be one of the first channels on Youtube. The manager from Kosa records is very smart and reactive, it’s always a pleasure to chat with him on Instagram.
What do you think of the French electronic music scene? What do you think are the differences with Europe and the rest of the world?
The French Electronic music scene is composed of many nice Djs and producers. They are very active and want to take part of the major festivals all over the world: From St Marteen to Agafay! To be very honest, in my opinion there is no difference between Europe and the rest of the world since there is Instagram and Soundcloud. All electronic scenes have their influencers: Afro House is influenced by Keinemuzik. When they use a cowbell in a track, you can be sure the rest of the world will use this instrument too. When Solomun is playing a new track, everyone is looking for this track to play it like him…
What evolution do you think electronic music is experiencing on the international scene?
Electronic music is now everywhere: we can see that if you are listening to the last album from Beyonce, of Drake for example. Deep House, Afro House or Techno are hype. It’s a real chance for a producer to grow in the electronic music because the audience is getting bigger and bigger, people are always looking for new producers to discover.
What can you tell us musically about your Podcast for Villahangar?
It was a real pleasure to record one hour set for Villahangar. My routine to record a set is always the same: selection of tracks I love to play, and after I organize them in respect of Camelot Key as I do since many years now, to get a result groovier and with nice harmonics. It’s more difficult but the result is much more appreciated.
