This week Villahangar for MusicintheAir Podcast hosts again as guest dj, a music duo that distinguishes itself with an electronic sound dense with ethnic references: the Everything Counts.
Since 2018, year in which Teodora’s (Toshka) and Chris Leon’s musical project was born, their artistic partnership showed musical affinities and the will to melt two different backgrounds with tastes in common.
Their passion for music began soon. Teodora is Bulgarian from Sofia, and for instance when she was two she showed her predilection listening to music from the 70s – fun fact: jumping on his grandparents’ bed and singing loudly. After that from the 80s, she got passionate about the musical landscape at 360 degrees, from classical music to the most electronic and progressive sounds.
Chris, on the other hand, is a Salvadoran born in Italy, he comes from a Latin culture where music has a great relevance. Therefore, he was absorbed by Latin sounds since he was little. Later he too then got interested into all-round music to then get closer to the electronic world.
Everything Counts both live in Italian Switzerland, and met in the clubs. Their tuning – fun fact 2, it was not immediate – was then developed and it created their electronic sound with ethnic references.
A characteristic developed thanks to a mix of factors: their origins, the lived experiences, the folkloristic music from their countries that influences them.
All of this, allowing however to join their specificities under the sign of curiosity: Teodora is deeper and more mental, while Chris is more groove. And so there was born to them a sound that is progressive, elegant and in continuous evolution.
In conclusion their creation process is never linear: it often sees them starting from an idea subject to changes thanks to the mood of the moment. A team work that completes itself: firstly Teodora writes sounds and melodies, and secondly Chris takes care of putting things in order and he usually creates the groove.
It is a process in becoming as shown from the ethnic imprint that is completely random in “The Bedouin”, their debut album. In fact, for their first album the initial intention was not to create an ethnical EP: but it was the inspiration of the time that brought them into including these sounds.
And therefore, very often, melodic and progressive music is the initial direction, that then changes. For example, “Vora” was born as a progressive disc, enriched afterwards by the insertion of the ethnic voice. The other works, “Tuareg” and “La Siembra” had them too a very quick and unexpected processing.
What is in your present, both on the musical and on the human level?
How do you live now and how did you live in the recent past this particular moment of epidemic for humanity?
Above all we take advantage of this moment in a creative way. Similarly, we take it without despair.
Present and future, Updates. What are the last projects that came out, under processing and due out?
We are planning various releases including 2 EP on Moblack Records with remix of emerging artists that are very valid, and another EP on the label Pipe & Pochet. Moreover, we have various collaborations under processing for 2021.
– What are the hopes for your artistic future at the moment?
To bring our music into the clubs.
